The only reason I didn't give a 10 is because there are minor things that could have been better. (That's the fanboy speaking.) As a stand alone movie(see what I did there ;)) it's good. There were times I forgot I was in the cinema, that's the mark of perfect execution for me. That means scenes flowed smoothly, the acting was spot on and the story progressed well.<br/><br/>As a Ghost in the shell fan, yes I have watched everything GitS and enjoyed it thoroughly. This movie is no different. It may depart from the psychological aspect of some of the main series, which is fine because this is only a 2 hour movie and it was crammed instead with action and fluid plot. And conclusion. Very satisfying overall.<br/><br/>If you come in with high hopes you'll be disappointed. Instead of picturing the movie YOU want, just enjoy it for what it is. A well executed, action packed part of the GitS franchise. Movies are meant to be experienced, not overly analyzed at the expense of fun.<br/><br/>With the slew of, honestly, disgustingly bad films recently and to come, that have zero acting talent, poor script writing and plotthinthe air of deep space, while still enjoying a massive Hollywood budget, I'd say give this a try.<br/><br/>This movie makes me believe that Hollywood isn't utter junk yet.<br/><br/>GitS is good.
I tend to not be a movie goer very much. While I like Scarlett, I do not go out and see a film just because she is in it. However, I roomed with a guy back in the 1990s that was a die hard fan of Manga/Anime.<br/><br/>I had heard all the hype on all sides of the fence about how this film would be terrible, but decided I had nothing better to do and went in anyway. I was pleasantly surprised and this exceeded my expectations.<br/><br/>I was worried that this was going to be another, blow everything up, endless shootings, tons of martial arts fight scenes, Scarlett taking out roomfuls of men at a time….and while there are elements of that present, it is NOT one of those types of films.<br/><br/>Sure, it is not totally on par with the Manga, but Scarlett presents Major with real authenticity. The film tries to stay true to the original story line and there is much depth to be found here. Thank god this thing did not try to pass it off with a lot of CGI and no plot.<br/><br/>Ghost in the Shell has heart to it, even asking the viewers the questions of how important is memory to us? Should it even be? Do our actions tell more about our character than what we remember? It also poses the question of how much humanity one can lose with a world ever reliant on being plugged into everything. Ultimately Major's conflict is herself, the ghost in the machine shell.<br/><br/>Great supporting roles from Pilou AsbekBatou, Takeshi KitanoAramaki, and Michael Pitt was an excellent choice for Kuze. I really do not see a lot to criticize here. Give it a chance and I think viewers will bepleasantly surprisedI. It gave me a little hope that Hollywood may one day understand that depth of a plot is more important than just special effects. This film does a good job of it.
If the "ghost" of anime classic Ghost in the Shell refers to the soul looming inside of its killer female cyborg, then this live-action reboot from director Rupert Sanders really only leaves us the shell: a heavily computer-generated enterprise with more body than brains, more visuals than ideas,if the original movie’s hard drive had been wiped clean of all that was dark, poetic and mystifying.
Several details and approach differ from the original anime. The Ghost in the Shell franchise is based off of a manga (comic), and so the films and series and even video games have all taken creative license from the original source material.<br/><br/>Making a live action film made certain styles and approaches to the physical rendering of the world impractical resulting in many visual differences to the new film that imbue an 80's cyberpunk feel similar to that of Blade Runner.<br/><br/>Another difference is that the storyline is a blend of several of the existing series, and does not follow the same storylinethe original film. Characters and back story are predominantly drawn from Stand Alone Complex 2nd gig, Stand Alone Complex, Arise and the original film.<br/><br/>The degree of violence and swearing in the original film is on a completely different level from the live action film. Creative camera angles obscure the genitals of the characters, and very little swearing is present in the new film.<br/><br/>There is no question that this is a Ghost in the Shell story, but in many ways the philosophy is simplified and the pace is much faster than the original anime. In the Ghost in the Shell stories, the Major has a completely prosthetic body. Although written and published in Japan, the original comic and some of the series show the Major in several bodies, and at times without a body entirely. It is believed by many that the artist's rendering of her prosthetic body was deliberately ambiguous in its ethnicity, while her "ghost" (the spirit that makes up her character) is also of obscure origin. It is assumed thatthe stories largely circulate in the region of Japan and east asia, that her original form was likely Japanese, though the Major speculates at times that she may be synthetic all-together; this is all a part of the philosophy discussed in the stories.<br/><br/>In the live action film, the Major is given a Japanese origin for her ghost.
